When You Think You Have MS
Lately there have been quite a few new members to the ms list I moderate who are not being treated well by their doctors. They feel their doctors are not taking there symptoms seriously. And many doctors don't take early ms symptoms seriously. Things like muscle tics, numbness, spasms, and exhaustion are oftentimes passed off as stress. It's true, these things do happen to people under severe stress, and it's a logical assumption to make the first time a patient comes in with one of those common complaints.
It's a frustrating, depressing experience that can bring even the strongest of people down.
I remember how frustrating
and angering it is to be told your symptoms are all in your head. I
even had a Dr suggest I was flat out crazy. My beginning symptoms were
things like occasional stuttering, hearing loss, and every so often my
left leg would just give out on me and I would end up on the ground,
with no warning. Another Dr prescribed drug treatment when my left leg
went totally numb. I almost lost my job over that one. I worked with challenged adults and children. Needing "drug treatment" was, rightfully so, a job terminating offense. The strongest thing I was using at the time, or have ever used for that matter was Marlboro Lights. (no, I do not smoke anymore. I was young and stubborn.)
However, we as a society have been indoctrinated to believe we need a doctor to tell us what's wrong and to prescribe medicine to fix us. Nothing could be further from the truth.
People with serious or chronic illness who fare the best are those who take their health in their own hands. They research symptoms or diagnosis, and all known treatments, allopathic and "alternative." They fight through the preconceived notions, the general medical 'god complex', and opinions of family and friends. They listen to internal guidance.... that "still, small voice" within that is always there to give wisdom and strength.
I've been there. I know how it feels to be belittled by those who are paid to help you. To be treated like you're crazy simply because the doctor can't figure out what's wrong with you. I know how it feels to have family treat you badly because they assume you're faking, or because your symptoms come and go.
I've come out the other side, and here's my advice:
Don't let it get you down. Attitude effects ms symptoms a
lot. So do emotions. Focus on what you CAN do instead of what you think
you can't. Engage in things that make you happy, even when you don't'
feel like it. I'm prone to depression, and forcing myself to do
something I enjoy helps bring me out of the fog.
Talk to people.. rant, cry, scream, write, whatever you do to let off steam.. do it -- often.
Take action. Make solid changes to your life and routines that
encourage health and support the immune system. Even without the
diagnosis -- it's not that important. Unless you need to go on
disability the dx is more of a hindrance than a help. Yes.. it's a
relief to have a name for this thing that is making you feel like
crap.. but the dx of ms makes it difficult to get health and life
insurance, could even keep you from a job you want. (yes, it's illegal,
but it happens) The label can make things tougher because doctors will
write you off as a lost cause, because you have an "incurable
disease"
Some things you can do on your own.
Look at your diet -- remove anything and everything you could have an
allergic or sensitivity reaction to. Common food additives and
preservitives are a common sensitivity. The Best Bet Diet is a good
place to start.
Add supplements known to strengthen and balance the immune system and neurological systems.
Consider LDN
Read about detoxification and the effects toxins have on our bodies.
Meditate daily. Envision your neurological system getting stronger and
rebuilding itself. Envision a balanced, well working immune system.
Exercise lightly. Exercise can help reduce muscle tone loss and rebuild lost muscle
Ask lots of questions. Do research to get answers to your questions.

Attitude of Healing
In church this morning, our minister reminded me of a very important fact -- Illness can have no impact on your body if your mind simply does not acknowledge the existence of illness.
Have you ever heard the saying "where the mind goes, the body will follow"? It's true. If you allow your mind to focus on illness and lack, you will attract illness and lack to your life and your body. While diet, lifestyle and genetics certainly can play a part in health, the state of the mind is equally important.
Here's an example: I knew a man many years ago who tested positive for HIV. He was convinced his wife and children would be better off if he died quickly. It wasn't long before he developed bull blown AIDS and became very sick. Within a year he was at death's door. Doctors estimated he'd be dead within a month of hospice admission.
One Saturday afternoon, the man's 20 something daughter came to see him. It was the first time any of his children had seen him since he became ill. He had ordered them all to stay away for their "own protection." But the daughter had something important to tell him and decided to ignore her dad's rule this time. She walked into her dad's room and immediately he could see she was very pregnant.
"Get out!" her dad told her. "You should not be here, you'll get sick"
"No, I won't dad. My doctor said I could come." she replied. " Your doctor tells us you probably wont make it to see your grandson born." The woman said through tears. "This is the only way I can be sure he'll meet you, Dad."
"Grandson? It's a boy?" The man's eyes welled up with tears. He had no sons and had always longed for a grandson.
"Yes, Dad. It's a boy - and I'm naming him after you." she leaned in to give her dad a hug, but then backed off. AIDS was still a fairly new illness and everyone was still unsure.
Father and daughter spent several hours visiting.
When the daughter left, hospice staff could hear him sobbing. The
'reality' of the situation had finally hit him. He was dying and he
would not see his children grow old, or even meet his first born
grandchild. He cried and ranted and cursed all night long. Hospice
staff considered calling his doctor and asking for something to help him sleep. But finally they decided it was better to let him take the time to process the situation. Finally, he fell asleep.
The next morning, the man declared to every person who walked by his door that he had decided he did not want to die and he would walk out of the hospice before that baby was born.
The nurses humored him, because they all knew he would die. But the man persisted. That afternoon, he started refusing his medication, saying he no longer needed it because he was no longer ill.
It didn't quite work that way, and he quickly found that he did, indeed need some of the medicines if he wanted to breathe. But, he successfully did without one or two other meds.
As the days went on, the man continued insisting he was getting better. And very slowly, he did. His doctor was forced to admit the man was not facing an immediate death, and so he was moved from hospice care to an HIV unit at the hospital.
The man persisted in denying he was ill, and affirming his health and vitality. Within a few weeks, he was back at home and working to repair the damage his negativity had done to his marriage. He apologized to his wife and children for resigning himself to death, and promised them he would spend his energy on living.
After several months, the man's condition was downgraded even further. He was declared HIV positive with no signs of AIDS.
I don't know what happened to the man after that because at that point the man and his family no longer needed the services of the agency I worked for, and we lost touch.
It doesn't matter what religion you are, or if you even believe in a higher power. What matters is your attitude. If a person believes they can be harmed by illness, then they give that illness power over them.
If, however you choose to affirm your life and your health, and you truly believe, at the core of your being, that you are well, the energy generated by that belief will resonate within you to increase the energy and health of your cells, eventually leading to health.
Use the herbs and treatments available to you, but never.. NEVER stop affirming your health.

Stimulants and ADD
Sometimes kids say the most interesting things.
A little background first-- my stepson is 8 years old, and has Asperger's and ADD. Roughly 3 years ago, I put him on a gluten free, additive free food plan. The entire family follows this eating plan because we're concerned about potential toxins in our food and the effects of additives and preservatives have on our health. With that food change, we saw a drastic improvement in the my stepson's behavior. His violent outbursts stopped, he had an easier time getting along with his siblings, and he became easier to teach-- he seemed to understand more.
Then, about one and a half years ago, we switched the family's diet again. This time we decided to forgo cooked foods, and went on a raw food plan. We're not perfect, and occasionally we slip. Early on in our raw food experiment we slipped and ate rice and beans or something similar for dinner. We noticed that for the next 5 days or so stepson had a very difficult time speaking He's always had language difficulties and it's something we rarely notice unless there is significant change. This was a drastic decline from his normal speech. We increased his detox herbs a bit and waited it out. Predictably, as the cooked meal left his system his speech returned to normal.
Afterwards, he was able to describe the extperience a little. He said it was "hard to think." With his permission, I started experimenting with different natural foods to see which foods, if any, impached his thinking. We found that sugar, potatoes, and beans gave him problems. But he's never been able to identify any foods which seem to have a specific positive effect.
Until now.
Today, he made airpopped popcorn for everyone. Around here, the person who pops the corn gets to season the popcorn. We use olive oil and which ever natural spices are desired. My 13 yr old daughter asked 8yr old why he always makes the popcorn so spicey. (His favorite seems to be either lime/lemon juice and chilli powder or onion and garlic powders with a little bit of salt)
He answered her very specifically. "Hot food makes it easier to think."
I asked him about it and he is adamant that he notices a difference in his thinking when he eats spicey foods. He says the improvement lasts all day.
I find this interesting since stimulants are used in allopathic medicine to treat ADD/ADHD. I'm going to reasearch this a bit more, but in the meantime I'll be adding more spicey foods to our daily menu.

Homemade Facial Scrubs
Do you like to use facial scrubs, but are concerned about chemical additives? You have good reason to be concerned. Chemicals in our soaps, shampoos and cosmetic products are absorbed through the skin, creating more toxins our bodies have to eliminate. Absorbed toxins can cause the same typed of problems as inhaled and ingested toxins.
Making your own, toxin free, facial scrub is easy, and you can customize the ingredients to suit your needs. Another selling point - it's much less expensive to make your own than to buy a commercial product.
2 cups clay
1/4 cup ground almonds
2 TBS finely ground lavender
2 TBS poppy seeds (finely ground blue corn works well, too)
1 cup ground oats
2 TBS ground rose petals
a few drops of your favorite pure essential oil (optional)
Mix everything in a large glass jar with a lid. When you're ready to use your facial scrub, take 1 or 2 teaspoons of this mixture and stir in enough distilled water to make a paste.
Rub over skin in small circular motions, as you would any other facial scrub. Rinse completely with pure warm water.

Herbal Honey--
Herbal Honey--
I've been looking for ways to get my daily ginseng without taking capsules. I like ginseng tea, but don't always have time for a good cup of tea. You can preserve herbs in honey, and the qualities of the herb are also extracted into the honey. So, I concocted this yummy blend to use in teas or to drizzle over fruit salads.
1 part ginseng. Slice the ginseng like a carrot. If you're using dried ginseng, it will be easier to slice if you soak it first.
1/2 part diced fresh ginger
1/2 part diced or crumbled cinnamon stick.
Place the herbs at the bottom of a wide mouth jar. Warm your honey by placing the closed honey container in a bowl or pitcher of hot water. When the honey is warm, pour enough honey over the herbs to completely cover them.
Put a lid on the jar and let sit in a warm place for 2 or 3 weeks.
You can add any herbs you like to this mixture. Play around with it until you find a blend that suits your heath and your tastes.
Enjoy!

Low Dose Naltrexone
Low Dose Naltrexone
Low dose naltrexone, or LDN, is used by people with autoimmune disorders to help regulate the immune system. I use LDN as one piece of my ms management puzzle. Less than 24 hours after my first dose of LDN, I was able to spin my then 2 yr old daughter around in circles for the first time in her live. A little thing, maybe. But huge to me. My balance returned, my moods evened out, I stopped going into "overload", and the last of my vision cleared.
I know people who have been diagnosed with autoimmune type cancers who used only LDN, diet and supplements as treatment are alive today to tell their story despite being given a death sentence.
LDN is typically helpful for people with Crohn's disease, Lupus, Hashimoto's, ms, als, and a host of other immune disorders.
For more information, got to theLow Dose Naltrexone website.

H1N1 Vaccine??
Will you be giving your family the H1N1 vaccine? We won't.
It's been confirmed that the H1N1 vaccine, and in fact, most flu seasonal flu vaccines, contain Thimerosal and/ or mercury. Check out this chart from the Institute for Vaccine Safety /John's Hopkins Bloomberg School for Public Health: Thimerosal Content in Some US Licensed Vaccines
Yes, it's a small amount of mercury, but why inject mercury into your child at all? Mercury is considered toxic. Many people concerned about their health spend good money and a lot of time trying to remove the mercury from their brain and other tissues. Mercury poisoning is one of the possible factors in autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis. Other possible health problems from mercury include thyroid problems, Alzheimer's Disease, kidney problems, future infertility and various immune system disorders. Here is a link to Dr. Mercola's article on mercury toxicity and detoxification. Mercury Toxicity and Systemic Elimination Agents
Outside of the mercury controversy is the question of the safety and effectiveness of this vaccine. It is an unproven, and poorly tested vaccine. Pharmaceutical companies rushed to manufacture the H1N1 vaccine at the request of the US. Government in order to protect against a pandemic which may never happen. Do you remember the Swine Flu pandemic of 1976? Probably not, because despite the warnings of the CDC and general panic within the US health care system there WAS NO pandemic - no massive death toll. Although many people died or became ill because of the flu shot they received.
You can avoid getting the H1N1 flu simply by taking Vitamin D3. Dr Mayer Eisenstein suggests taking 10,000 IU of Vitamin D3 for three days at the first sign of flu. His complete flu protocol suggestions can be found on his website Homefirst Health Services.
** note.. I am not receiving any compensation for my recommendations of Dr Mercola or Dr. Eisenstein. I refer to information from both of these doctors when taking care of my own family's health.

The New msQuill blog
Hello faithful readers! I've moved this blog around quite a bit over the past few years. In my quest to create the "perfect" natural health website and blog combo, I've been changing providers, formats and even urls.
But, I've finally given up on the quest for perfection and instead will focus on bringing you the best information I can find on herbs, vitamins & minerals, aromatherapy, Reiki, meditation, and low dose naltrexone. Within a few months, I'll be offering a (hopefully) ever-growing selection of E-books which bring together my research on natural health topics, along with a small selection of dried herbs, tinctures and teas.
